Contextual Information

Hinkley Point C is a nuclear site, based in West Somerset, 15 miles from Bridgwater. The NNB ambition is to build two major EPR nuclear plants, and the position will be part of HPC Project Management Team working within the Delivery Command Centre.

Because of the scale and complexity of this project, the programme duration and the immovable completion date, the DI Mechanical Engineer must have proven experience in the execution of large and complex works projects under similar constraints.

Essential Duties:

Principal Accountabilities

The principle accountability for the DI Mechanical Engineer is to support the pre-construction planning for the project. Pre-Construction Planning analysis horizons go beyond current activities on site, and include the work to be completed through to the Commercial Operation Date.

Safety is the overriding priority for any activity performed during Pre-Construction Planning which includes nuclear safety as well as Industrial Safety. Planning the work must also recognize the importance of a strong Nuclear Safety and Quality culture and the importance of a right first time attitude.

The DI Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for:
  • Coordination of constructability, pre-construction sequence planning
  • Supporting development of integrated L3/4 contractor schedules, and de-risking L3/4 activities
  • Supporting Project Managers and site Area Managers to ensure work is transitioned smoothly from Engineering Design to Construction
  • Coordination with equipment procurement on delivery needs and developing mitigating actions in time to avoid any impacts to site activities
  • Coordinating interfaces with other delivery programmes (progress, construction interfaces, etc.)
  • Coordinating and supporting resolution of risks and issues
  • Support to Project Managers and contractors on interfaces including progress on site, planning changes and impact analyses
  • Reviewing Construction and Installation Execution Plans
  • Developing detailed access routes for personnel and equipment, identifying suitability of the access routes, impacts to other work activities and identification of temporary access openings for equipment installation.
  • Interfacing with logistics on supporting activities such as laydown areas, and work area coordination for activities such as housekeeping and work face storage
Note: not a comprehensive list, and not all skill sets are expected from all candidates, a selection of experience across key fields will enable a successful team to be built with specialisms to cover all aspects of the project.

Dimensions

The post holder will be based either at Delivery Command Centre in Bristol or the Site Command Centre near Bridgwater. Eventual location at the Bridgwater site may be necessary. May be required to travel to other company locations in the UK and possibly Europe as required.

In addition, a good understanding of project planning processes and the ability to identify and resolve complex interfaces. Experience across many types of EPC contracts specifically knowledge of the NEC and FIDIC contracts is beneficial. Therefore, demonstrable competencies within Mechanical Engineering and Construction fields will be considered for the role challenges.

Basic Qualifications
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant technical discipline as well as a experience working on large construction project, or significant relevant experience in the absence of a degree.
